Rooted in the tradition of California’s guitar builders from a past generation, Grez Guitars builds R.C. Allen-designed archtops and unique semi-hollowbodies loosely influenced by P.A. Bigsby’s construction techniques as well as steel string flat top acoustics, solid body guitars and basses.  Each handcrafted guitar is a singular creation, combining a unique style and approach to voicing with each musician’s personal touches.

Quotes from the Pros

“The Grez SR-15 oozes sophistication, warmth, and rich string definition ...and is a transformative, and an inspired creation for the discriminating guitarist.”    Oscar Jordan, Vintage Guitar Magazine

“Loving this guitar: does 3 things better than all my other guitars:   slide ala Elmore James, all things JJ Cale and all things jazzy/ bossa nova-y”    Jonathan Burnside, Producer

“I love my vintage pieces but they've taken a back seat to my Grez...This is without a doubt the most versatile guitar I've ever owned!”     Gary Vogensen, Artist

"You have really knocked it out of the park with the Nightingale; truly a beautiful instrument"   Paul Pigat, Artist

“Greatest work horse Guitar I’ve ever owned ,best investment I’ve made in years ..I Love My Grez ...”

Roger Thoreson, Artist

A quick word about materials.  I work in both solid wood and laminated wood.  For laminated applications, I hand lay up individual veneers to create top and back plates. I use solid wood for acoustic guitars and for my semi-hollowbodies.  Using solid wood for semi-hollowbodies is an important part of how I get so much resonance out of a design that inherently doesn't want to resonate.  I see full hollow archtops as just the opposite.  Solid wood in this application often resonates too much for the player working at moderate stage volumes.  So my archtops use laminated materials to help control resonances.

Depending on the neck size, material and design, carbon fiber

reinforcement is sometimes added to insure the neck completely

stable.  I feel that, when a neck is stiffer, it resonates and interacts

less with the fretted note and in turn increases note to note

consistency - fewer hot and dead spots along the neck.

Left-handed builds are welcome and if you're a fingerstyle player, we can marry the extra wide and string spacing of your old Martin to any of the guitars we make. Bass Players - I build both semi-hollowbody and full hollow basses that are heavily influenced by instruments like the Howlin Wolf Bass or the Harmony H22.
